What Would You Do In This Situation?

Hey guys! I have a quick question for you. If you were me, and let’s say this blog was worth $150,000, would you sell it? If no, why? If yes, why?

Here’s why I ask. I came across Dane Carlson’s Business Opportunities Weblog again yesterday, remembering that he had that “How much is your blog worth?” calculator on his site. When I began this blog two months ago, it was worth $0.00, and slowly increased a few dollars here and there. Well, I ran the URL again yesterday and voila! I came across this:
blogworth.jpg

If in some imaginary world, my blog was actually worth $155,813.04, that would be crazy. I’m not sure anyone would buy it as it is for that much. BUT let’s say we’re in this imaginary world right now. And let’s say you’re me. What would you do? I’d like to hear what you all think about this. Remember that this is my name domain, not some really broad and awesome blog site name. And feel free to post your domain’s “worth” too to see what others would do with your site. This discussion could get really interesting. :)

since we’re in this imaginary world, I would have to consult with my imaginary wife, Jessica Alba and see what she says first . . . but my gut is telling me not to sell yet

No way I am selling my blog for that money, maybe I will monetize it a bit more, but no way selling it out, I started blogging some time back, I had no idea what to blog about, but these days, I am addicted about blogging, whenever I get an idea, a thought, a feeling, seeing something funny, thinking something stupid, i remember my blog that instant, i think will my readers like it? Its a great feeling to have, but i am a bit sad about the commenting on my blog, but then people are reading it, that makes me feel SUPER! Oh, this was supposed to be the imaginary world right? Okie, I will not sell my blog, but brag about it for 2 days and live with that worth feeling for a month!

Wow … well I would hold on to it … until it got as big as John Chow’s Blog …. valued at almost $2,000,000.00 !!!

LOL

Exactly! I’d sell it in a heartbeat and just start another one (or ten). And sell those!!!!!

And I checked my blog, it’s worth $187,427.28 just a teeny bit more ;)

Boo-hoo, my site is only worth $29k so I would not sell. :(

But looking at your question, I think it would be prudent to sell if someone really wanted to pay that much. Once you sold the site, you could start a new site and build it right back up again.

Often times the value of the blog is really on the person behind the blog as opposed to the site itself. If you were replaced with another author, the site wouldn’t be the same as the one that was valued at $x.

Well..I would sell the blog. You just realize to know that the golden goose is YOU, not the blog. :-)

However, in real world my blog is worth 0, so I wouldn’t sell it. But for 150k…I definitely would.

I just checked mine and I was surprised to not see $0, it was actually was $3,000 hmm.. interesting, but who would buy a domain named after myself? Danielle, at least yours could be valuable to the other millions of Danielles in the world, but mine is only valuable to me really, or someone that hates me I guess… and oh yeah, I figured out my tagline: “The ravings, rantings and lunatical stylings of a webmaster -slash- journalist” what ya think?

is “lunatical” a word? :D sounds like an awesome tagline! very specific indeed

ok so here’s the tally so far:

Gary - No, unless Jessica Alba tells him to do it ;)
Anand - No, at least not until he milks it some more
Darin - Yes, but not until it reaches $2mil
Ed, Jon & Derrich - Hell Yes!
Benedict - I’m not sure, but sounds like it’s a Yes if the person is dumb enough to buy it!
Derek - Yes, and do it multiple times :)
Tejas - Yes, and lay some more eggs!
Kristofer - I’m not sure, but he has a great tagline figured out!
I am Blog - Yes! Sell, sell, SELL!

from websters online dictionary:
lu·na·tic /ˈlunətɪk/ [loo-nuh-tik] –noun
1. an insane person.
2. a person whose actions and manner are marked by extreme eccentricity or recklessness.
3. Law. a person legally declared to be of unsound mind and who therefore is not held capable or responsible before the law.
–adjective
4. insane; demented; crazy.
5. characteristic or suggestive of lunacy; wildly or recklessly foolish.
6. designated for or used by the insane: a lunatic asylum.
7. gaily or lightheartedly mad, frivolous, eccentric, etc.: She has a lunatic charm that is quite engaging.

Also, lu·nat·i·cal /luˈnætɪkəl/ [loo-nat-i-kuhl] (for defs. 4, 5, 7).

Yep.. that sounds about right..

I think it depends if you need the money … i am also not sure how accurate that calculator is and what metrics it uses to evaluate a blog’s worth so for now i would refrain from selling expecially since you’ve only been at it for 2 months. Give it a few more months and if you’ve not improved significantly sell, depending on what price you receive !!

for all those willing to sell the blog, I have to ask, wht about the domain? I think most of use except wolf stone and iamblog, all of use have out names in the domain, will you let go of that? will you sell your name for money :-)

“Anand - No, at least not until he milks it some more”

ya, I am planning to milk it a bit more, got some inspiration from paula mooneys list, I am 58th there!!!!! ;-)

ok so let’s see who else would sell their blog in my imaginary world:
wolf - let it mature, then sell!
derrich - yes! again! lol :D
jason - yes, and repeat in batches of 10
adim - yes, and then blink ;)
goldy - sell and subsequently become internet-free! (well, for one year…)
scott - sounds like a yes!
hmmmmm… seems like almost everyone would sell! interesting…. :D

$150K after two months of blogging? Assuming you could turn 6 of these a year that’s $900,000 a year! For some reason, I’m reminded of a Dire Straits song right now …. :P
