Virginia Tech: What We Can Do to Help

I would have added this as an update to my previous announcement, but I felt it was too important and merited its own post. The enormity of this event is of monumental and unprecedented proportion, and so deserves our attention and support. With that said, here is what I’m doing to help spread the word on how we can help ease the burden from the families of the VTU tragedy victims.

1. Stay educated
Virginia Tech has created a page on their site that contains daily updates. You can find their official updates here.

2. Donate
Help the families of the victims of this horrible tragedy! There are two ways to send in your memorial donations to VTU.

  • Online*: Fill out their Online Form to send your memorial gift electronically. This is faster than mailing in your check, and more likely to reach them safely. Don’t forget to include the designated amount in the “Gift Information” under “Other,” and include the notation “Virginia Tech Family Fund” in the available field.
*You can set up recurring payments on your credit card, or pay by securities or electric bank draft from this page as well.
  • By mail: Send your memorial gift payable to the “Virginia Tech Foundation.” The address is:
    Office of University Development(0336)
    Virginia Tech Family Fund
    Virginia Tech
    Blacksburg, VA 24061

3. Spread the word
I believe it’s times like these that each of us can do our part in keeping those around us aware of what’s happening in the world, and also using our connections for the good of humanity. Do your part and help spread the word about how we can all help the families of the VTU tragedy victims. You can copy and paste the above three points (education, donation, and awareness) to your blog, and include your own sentiments in point three on how and why others can help.

I’ve sent in my donation via their online system. It’s very quick and easy to use. I urge you all to take a minute and send in what you can. I’m not going to disclose the dollar amount I’ve donated, because it’s not important. But to put things in perspective for you all, one week’s worth of Starbucks lattes is $18. Can you spare at least that much?

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Update (4/23): Virginia Tech has set up a separate memorial fund specifically to remember and honor the victims of this terrible tragedy. If you’ve already sent in your memorial donation, it should still reach the same fund. The new fund is called the “Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund” and it needs your donations. yes but please let’s not forget that we need to be active too, not just silent. let’s all pay our respects to the victims and their families by observing the one day silence, but in addition, it will help the families more if we send memorial donations to help them out. don’t forget to send in your donations here: http://www.vt.edu/tragedy/memorial_fund.php

the families need our help.
