Top 5 Reasons to Adopt A Needy Pet: A ProBlogger Writing Project
May 9th, 2007 by msdanielle

I used to work at an animal hospital and people would abandon pets all the time. They’d abandon them in the parking lot, like how I got Binky, or they’d leave a box of kittens on a shelf somewhere, or even throw kittens out of a moving car (true story!). We’d have to call whatever nearby animal shelter or rescue agency we could find to come pick them up - that is, if they had available staff, transportation and room at their facilities. It was rare that more than one, if that, would have all three at once.
With that said, here’s my Top 5 Reasons to Adopt A Needy Pet:
5. Save a life
When you adopt from a shelter or animal rescue, most of the time you’ll be saving an animal from a horrible fate - euthanasia. Normally they’ll get a shot of this crazy fluorescent “pink stuff” and they go sleepy-bye forever.
4. Create a better life for them
Many of these shelters and rescues don’t have adequate means to provide a great life for the animal (if they’re a no-kill shelter), so they’re under-nourished and don’t receive the attention they need to sustain a happy and healthy life.
3. It’s cheaper than buying a new pet!
I once saw a chihuahua up for sale for $1,200! WTF?! It’s a chihuahua! Most shelters and rescues will sell the animal for a minimal adoption fee (less than $100) and they’re usually already spayed or neutered.
2. Reduce the number of pet store pets sold
Many pet stores buy puppies, kittens and rabbits from “backyard breeders.” These are people that breed animals purely for profit (not like the kinds you see on shows like Best in Show). Your puppy could’ve come from a “puppy mill” - someone’s house who has dozens of dogs and literally hundreds of puppies crammed into one small living space. These poor mama dogs! (Don’t believe it? I saw a house down the street from mine that got busted and they confiscated 350 “pure breeds.” They were later sold through local rescues.)
1. Last but not least, everyone should have a pet!
In my personal opinion, I think everyone should have some kind of pet - a dog, cat, fish, bird, snake, whatever! When properly taken care of, most animals will love you unconditionally for life and provide endless warmth in your home. Yes, even fish!

I’ve thought about doing this a hundred times but have just not come to terms with the commitment required but it is a noble endeavour and i definitely think highly of those who have adopted a pet.
Excellent post! And I agree, everyone should have a pet… they make great companions and are always happy to see you.
yea sometimes they’re the most appreciative since a lot of them were neglected in their previous homes

I adopted a mixed breed dog from a shelter and he turned out to be probably the smartest dog I ever had. He was trained to be a working dog and learned quickly. I have three dogs altogether, two of which were a little on the expensive side. But the shelter dog is by far the family favorite. Great post!
thanks! working dogs are great. my mom had a border collie and he was the greatest dog a man could ever have

#6 reason to adopt a needy pet: get a free meal :))
Pet Adoption is fun.. I picked up a 9 year old cat from a shelter last November and it’s been great so far. In fact, I’m thinking of getting another pet if I do move to a bigger apartment.
maki if i was a cartoon character, i’d look exactly like your avatar
hehe… that’s awesome about your cat. i’m planning on adopting some dogs in the future, but when i have a really large yard where they can run around and play. i’m going to have five - collie, sheltie, australian shepherd, welsh corgi and norfolk terrier
I am amazed at the number of people that still buy pets from shops when there are so many needy animals desperate for new owners in rescue centres.

That number 1 reason is a number 1 in book as well everyone should have a pet. Nothing like coming home after a long day and seeing a pet to bright n up your day
After seeing Binky and Roy (Michael Kwan’s bunny), I wanted to get one myself.
But my place is such a mess I’m afraid he’ll get lost.
Yeah pets are cool.. I’ve always had cats, and usually a dog as well. I have three cats right now, and 9 fish and one shrimp divided into two tanks. Two of my cats are brothers, Hokey and Pokey, they are part Siamese and part something-or-other, they’re just huge, and very vocal but fun. Sometimes I think they think they are dogs, they’ll growl when someone comes to the door, and run to the door to greet you when you come home. and my other cat is Molly, she’s a tabby who moved outside and now lives on my porch basically. I got all three of them through people who were going to give them to shelters.
how cute! Hokey and Pokey!
i had three rabbits all at once at one point. two were abandoned in the parking lot — one was Binky and the other was this big all-black rabbit named Frances. they were both about five weeks old when they were abandoned. the third one i took in when a friend of mine decided to move back to hawaii and she didn’t want to take her rabbit, Bunsington, with her. i gave away Frances and Buns to a rescue that houses rabbits and goats on a farm because having three male rabbits is hard to manage in a condo. they were always fighting.

Yay for adoption! I’ve fostered dogs for almost ten years. Seen way too many abandoned. An animal is for life.
Adopt!

I think people should only adopt a pet if they are ready to commit to caring for that pet for life. But when you ARE ready and do have the resources, it’s a wonderful thing! We adopted our cat from a shelter and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

All 5 reasons are completely true! I think people don’t realize how hard it is for animals in shelters until they go visit one, how can you not want to take every single one home when you see them in the small cages? Taking one home is the best thing you can do for yourself and them. I love coming home to mine and snuggling with them!
All pets need time to adjust to a new home, but once they do they will love you with all thier heart.

I adopted a black furry rabbit from SPCA and I named her Ash. I wish I could take in more animal from the shelter. It was heart wrenching to see the dogs looking at me so sadly. Pets are not supposed to be bought, forgotten and abandoned. I would like to have a dog some day and my first choice is to visit the SPCA. My reasons (1) abandaned but adorable (2) save a life (3) low cost (4) companionship (5) … I can’t think of a 5th reason.
