binky.jpg

Almost two and half years ago, I got my baby bunny Binky. Binky was the cutest thing you ever saw — a teenie fluffy furball with a white cotton tail. Rabbits “bink” when they’re happy, and that’s how he got his name. “Binking” is when they jump up in the air and kick their legs to the side, and silently scream to themselves “Yippeeeee!!!” He was happy when I brought him home.

Binky’s Plight
Binky’s tale was a sad one to begin with. He’d been abandoned by his previous owner in a parking lot, left to fend for himself as he sat helplessly inside an unassuming cardboard box. It was only a few days after Christmas, and he was only five weeks old. Someone found him and gave him to me because I’m an animal lover and part-time foster mom to abandoned and rescued animals, and he’s been with me ever since. Sometimes people buy pets and don’t realize the time and attention it takes to raise them, just as a child, but I guess some people see animals as easy to throw away. :(

But on the bright side, Binky’s had the best life that anyone could give him. He’s a healthy two-and-a-half year-old bunny who’s got free reign of my bedroom and bathroom! Yes, he’s litter-box trained, and he sleeps under my bed, and comes to me when I call his name. He sits under my vanity when I do my makeup, and greets me when I walk in the door. It’s like having a cat that sheds once every three months, but doesn’t meow!

So What?
In the United States, today is Easter. If you or someone you know is one of the many who’ve gotten caught up in the Easter Bunny craze, and you’re not sure how to care for your rabbit, please educate yourself on all things bunny by visiting Rabbit.org. They’re a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about rabbit care, rescuing abandoned and abused rabbits, and helping place them in new homes.

This is one of the busiest times of the year for rabbit rescues, so if you live in the United States or Vancouver, and you’re looking for a rabbit to adopt, you can view their online adoption listings here.

Ahh I’m scared of rabbits. I got one as a kid and I would hold it by its ears because I wouldn’t want to touch it elsewhere. Needless to say, it ran away the next day.

There was no rabbit.org back in the day :S

What a great story!! I always wanted a bunny. It’s so cool that you can house train them too. We just got a little pup and she is the cuttest thing!

I got an Australian Kelpie! We just moved to Oz so i’d never seen one before. We visited the RSPCA, and thought she was so cute!

She is at that stage of big feet at the mo!!! :L Very long legs too, it’s so funny!

i’ve never heard of an australian kelpie before, but i looked up their pictures and it looks like a mix between a german shepherd and an australian cattledog. :) i love herding dogs! 3 of my top faves are border collies, australian shepherds and collies. oh, and can’t forget welsh corgi… so cute!

I thought there was something wrong with my sister’s rabbit until Danielle told me about the whole “bink” thing. I thought it was having a seizure or something.

Got a brown rabbit many years and I called him “BitBit”. When he died (despite being treated by the vet), I just didn’t had the heart to keep another one. Recently I adopted one black furry from the SPCA. She was sweet, I called her Ash. I just don’t understand why people bought pets and abandoned them. I guess they don’t see them as living things with equal emotional and physical needs. If more people start treating animals well, I’m sure the world will become a much better place.

Binky sounds so cool :D

I love animals. It always upsets me to hear stories of people abandoning their pets. Fortunately for Binky you found him and gave him a great home :)
