My Top 5 Favorite Childhood Cartoons
Jun 4th, 2007 by msdanielle
This is a meme that I made up, and hopefully you all can relate to this one!
These are my Top 5 Favorite Cartoons that I remember from childhood. Feel free to post yours too and let me know.
The Smurfs
I love the Smurfs. I mean, who doesn’t, right? My favorite character, of course, was Smurfette… Most likely I related to her because she was the only girl, and I was the only girl growing up in my household, well, besides my mom. I was a really happy kid when we got The Smurfs for NES.
The Flintstones
Another classic that I grew up on. Dino, Mr. Slate, the Great Gazoo, the Grand Pubbah, you know what I’m talking about. I wish I had a bird that I could open cans with.
The Jetsons
The other well known Hanna-Barbera cartoon. I had a soft spot for Rosie, since she had to clean up after everyone and was never appreciated. And I always wanted a conveyor belt in my house that would toss me out of bed and throw my clothes on me before I woke up…I’m not a morning person.
Inspector Gadget
Go Gadget, Go! What a nutty cartoon! I love Inspector Gadget. You never knew where Chief Quimby would pop up to give Gadget his next assignment. And the fact that the self-destructing messages always blew up in his face never got tired. Poor Brain, though, having to dress up like women and astronauts to hide his identity from Gadget. Taking one for the team…good dog…
Tom & Jerry
I think the old Tom & Jerry is the best “silent cartoon” out there. I don’t know if that’s a real term, but Tom & Jerry is simply brilliant because of its enormous humor mixed with a lack of dialog. I remember when years later the characters started talking, and I thought, “Animation has officially gone to crap.”
Runners up: The Simpsons, Transformers, Popeye, Mighty Mouse, Scooby Doo, Garfield, Looney Tunes, Road Runner, Voltron, Disney classics, and the Wuzzles. What are yours? And you’re not allowed to say “I never watched cartoons,” because well, it’s every kid’s responsibility to watch them!

Define “childhood” …. I’m still watching cartoons, and I’m almost 30.
Looney Tunes and Animaniacs (is high school still childhood?) were two of my absolute favourites. But that said, I don’t think I could select only five and say “There were my favourites”.
hehe… i actually listed Animaniacs, but then erased them thinking, That was high school
junior high (or middle school) is also considered childhood in my book…hence the simpsons…
some of my adult cartoon favorites are cowboy bebop, harvey birdman attorney at law, spirited away (not that it’s a series but i’ve watched the dvd about 100 times), king of the hill, and blood (the dvd)
I still watch cartoons myself.. I’m 35, but then I have kids, so I have no choice in the matter… but I do try and watch Anime when I have the time, not quite a cartoon, but could be considered that way… and I remember I had a crush on Penny when I was a kid… hehe
Man. This meme brings back some memories.
I’m 24 and I still enjoy cartoons, but I find myself only watching re-runs of older stuff. Somehow, I’m not a fan of newer cartoons like X-Men: Evolution or the new Ninja Turtles. I much prefer the older stuff…. in terms of “new” cartoons, I like Family Guy and South Park.
You’ve inspired me, msdanielle. Look for my five childhood favorites in my blog sometime tomorrow.
P.S. Animaniacs was good — the Godpigeon was fantastic — but the best part of that show was easily Pinky & The Brain. Narf! Zort! Egad!
Road Runner … I’m still waiting for the live-action movie!
I simply loved The Smurfs! and also Bugs Bunny, well anything Looney Tunes!
At my age, I still watch cartoons although not as often as before. I’m not sure I can come up with a list of my Top 5 Cartoons coz I love almost all of them. Hehe
Aside from those you mentioned I also like Thundercats, Voltes V, Centurions, Bionic 6, SilverHawks, Voltron, GI Joe, Transformers, Visionaries, He-Man, BraveStarr, Gobots, Mazinger-Z, Danger Mouse, Dino-Riders, Dungeons and Dragons, Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Inhumanoids, Macross, Johnny Quest, Sky Commanders, Super Friends, and many others.
@kristofer – do your kids watch the old school cartoons? i bet renting inspector gadget would make for some really great QT

i didn’t watch too many of the other ones. i was more “jem” in elementary school
@michael – remember when animaniacs did the states song? for some reason that episode sticks out in my mind. OG ninja turtles were pretty awesome too
@shane – did u tell that to gary?
@jonathan – i loved porky pig!
@jaypee – i see you loved all the cartoons for boys. gobots, d&d, voltron, transformers, ninja turtles, and he-man (and she-ra!) were cool.
Where is Ed?!?! i’m sure you have some awesomely awesome cartoon favorites!
Do you remember the wheel of morality?
vaguely. my memory is fading these days
the flinstones/Jetsons were my best. I wasn’t really a fan of Tom and Jerry because, ther were only three possible ending thereby making it too predictable.
- Tom gets messed up
- They both become firends
-They both get messed up
Or sometimes Jerry gets messed up.

No the only cartoons they watch are the Saturday Morning ones.. the rest of the time I have them watch PBS with sesame street, cyber chase, arthur, bob the builder etc…
Probably my all time fav, and what got me into Anime was Robotech though, still my favorite, I remember coming home from school to watch Robotech everyday in grade school..
What about Fraggle Rock on HBO(although it was more puppets than cartoons)? The Littles were good as well. Heathcliff was greatness. M.A.S.K also filled my afternoon.
Today, I watch Strong Bad and Cheat Commandos over at Homestarrunner.com. Cheat Commandos bring back great memories for G.I. Joe fans.
HomeStarRunner FTW!
The best cartoon that no one knew about was Eek The Cat, although in the overall scope of things probably wouldn’t have made my Top 5 childhood cartoons…maybe.
Yeah I remember the Smurfs and all the other ones. I still watch the Jetsons with my son everyday. How about Get A Long Gang or He man or Jem??? They were classics…may be I’m just an oldie then!!
Get Along Gang was sweet too!
Geez, Danielle! I’ve got everyone in my office talking about this, and I can’t stop singing all the theme songs.
get along gang, heathcliff, robotech… yep, being a kid was GREAT. everyone loves cartoons. so, good water cooler banter??
@taylorblue – i was TOTALLY into jem in elementary school.
“synergy! we need your help!”
Still remember my favorite cartoon..popeye the sailorman
It seems we share the same taste in cartoons. I used to be a huge fan of all five of these as well. I’d also throw in Scooby Doo, Bugs Bunny and anything with Goofy in it
How about Thunder Cats???
Your list inspired my own.
