Uggh here its like $3.85 for Regular and $3.99 for Super and I feel sorry for the diesel peoples because they need to fill up every day and its $4.50 a gallon for them. I’m a teen now but when I get older if gas is like 6 dollars a gallon I would just move by a lot of stores so I could walk easy.

If gas was twelve dollars a gallon I would do two things:
1)Move closer to the office. I’m already planning on doing this now. Our old offices were only about a mile from my apartment–now they’re five and I miss my ten minute commute.
2)Bike to work a lot more. Austin is a fairly bikeable city and I’ve already tried biking to work once. It didn’t kill me and if I did it everyday it would quickly become easy.

They are even thinking of making you pay per mile driven in the UK, on top of the ridiculous prices maybe it’s a good signal that regular driving needs to be cut back on and people need to start using as much public transport as possible.

I would move to a city that does not require me to drive a car, New York, San Fransisco, etc. and start a movement to boycott the major gas companies until it actually impacted the prices.

where i grew up it was 10 cents per gallon! when i came to north america, it threw me for a spin! so i guess i will fill in the blank, move back to where the gas is 10 cents per gallon!

My last two jobs were an hours drive away, if I get the train I can read / use laptop / sleep… its not such a waste of time.

The one place was a few miles from the station so I did 14 miles per day on my mountain bike also, that meant the overall journey was longer, but it was good exercise… again time well spent IMO… A lot of people drive to the gym after work….

Train is a lot cheaper, we got rid of our second car, saved all the costs on insurance, road tax, fuel etc….

The main problem with trains is you catch every virus going… if bird flue ever takes hold I’m gonna be in big trouble!!!

Great topic. That’s a toughie to answer. Since I work from home, I rarely take my car out unless it’s a real short trip, or a Monday night race to the bar for football. I guess I’d carpool when I could. But the downside is we have 2 kids and the typical minivan gas guzzler. So not sure exactly what we’d do there to conserve, except to try planning our trips a lot better and maybe combine errands together (or I’d do them in my Honda Civic) and save the minivan purely for bigger trips with the kids.

I can’t wait for the electric hybrids to come out full force with th rechargeable batteries that you just plug in to your outlet. Then we can all stop complaining about high gas prices, and instead point to insane electric bills.

My prediction for the popular crime of this century will be stealing gas out of other cars while they are driving down the road. It’s only a matter of time before it becomes really practical.

I`m thankful owning a car in Japan isn`t even and option for me. My monthly bills are at the lowest they`ve been in my life ….. it`s amazing how many other costs come with owning a car. Guess it helps to live in a country with a world class transport system like Japan. I do miss the actual `Driving` part though.

@keith – i’d like to buy a scooter, but the 50 mile round-trip in and out of downtown LA on streets probably would take forever…
