How Do You Swing?
Jun 13th, 2007 by msdanielle
So we went to the range again yesterday. It had been two weeks since my last trek there, so warm up time was unnecessarily long. Gary says I’m improving but I’m not sure I agree. Sorry folks, no video today. I know how much you were looking forward to that too, since we all need a good laugh every once in awhile.
I’m having problems with my down swing, which is still feeling stiff and unnatural, almost like I’m scared to hit the stupid ball. There’s no grace in my swing at all. Anyway, it seems like a lot of my wonderful and loyal readers play golf.
Do you guys have feedback as to what stage the swing became more natural? What was your biggest improvement technique? I can get the form down, but putting it all together nicely is proving to be my biggest hurdle.
And isn’t that a really cool photo? It was taken by Harold Edgerton in 1938. He’s responsible for an endless library of photos capturing what our eyes don’t see — “making the invisible visible.”

I thought maybe that was you for a sec. Don’t get discouraged. It’ll come to you eventually. Just loosen up. Easier said than done, but I have faith in you, Danielle.
…and I swing side to side.
I don’t play golf at all – it’s too much time consumed. I’ll probably pick it up when I’m older, richer, and not working as much.
As for how I swing.. I swing straight.
Golf is such a pain in the butt, but if you hit just one really sweet shot… the 100 before it doesn’t matter. I’m hooked! My biggest tip… square the head and if that doesn’t work… slow everything down, until it does.
Strength training is really good for a golf swing.
You don’t need to go crazy with it, but it gives you a solid form and core that helps a lot with developing consistency. And consistency is the key to a great swing!
Hope that helps.
brick by brick . . . i agree with Shane that it’s a lot of strength training and muscle memory . . think about it . . that was your 3rd lesson . . . and you never practice between . . . so it’ll take some time
that is a cool photo. when are you going to take it to the course?
Years of off and on playing of golf and I have consistently gotten worse. My problem is also my down swing… supposedly my back swing is pretty.
Did you at least hit the ball?
i hit the ball but it doesn’t really go very far. it makes this dinky “bink!” sounds… i hit a couple good ones but i think they were a fluke. but when i hit the good ones, my body felt aligned… but again, it was a fluke. i’m supposed to be taking it to the course in the not-so-distant future.
@goldy – gary says my back swing is pretty too
@shane – i agree, i need to work on my strengthening exercises.
thanks everyone for your feedback! my quest continues…
I found your blog after I read a nice post by Ouchs where he said you are one of the top 5 hot female bloggers. I think he might be right!
I like golf, too. It took me a while and I am still inconsistent. But it’s so fun. I can hit straight most of the time but not much distance. The hardest part for me is getting the timing for the whole weight-shift-to-hit-from-the-hips thing, at least that’s what I call it. When I get it the ball just jumps with very little effort in the arms.
I haven’t been out in a while. Feeling the urge after reading your post.
Hi Danielle,
I’m not into golf but my son likes it.
I’m looking for used golf clubs for my son, he’s 6′ 5″ tall.
I looked at your featured website for used golf clubs but couldn’t find anything for tall people.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Hi Danielle
I came to your website via Zac Johnson’s website. I can commiserate with you over golf. I have been trying to perfect a golf swing for over forty years and still don’t think I have got it right. As your post is several years old you probably are feeling a lot better about your swing now. Once you have built up enough muscle memory you will be able to concentrate more on where you want the ball to go than on how to swing the club. Once you reach that point you will begin to get more enjoyment out of it. After all it’s a bit like learning to ride a bike – once you have mastered how not to fall off you are 90% there!
