Google to Give the Virtual Boot to Arbitrageurs
May 21st, 2007 by msdanielle
With all the changes that Google has going on these days, it’s been difficult to keep up with my reading. But one article in Search Engine Roundtable grabbed my attention in particular. I thought most of you who are using either AdWords or AdSense might find this an interesting discussion, if you haven’t already heard the news.
Basically, Google is giving the boot to AdSense Arbitrageurs. Arbitrage involves purchasing AdWords ads, driving clicks to your sites, and monetizing that traffic through AdSense. The mantra says, “In with AdWords, out with AdSense.” But not anymore. Although this practice isn’t against Google’s terms of service (TOS) right now, they will still be deactivating accounts that are using AdWords and AdSense for this main purpose.
Jennifer Slegg of Jensense.com explains further how publishers and advertisers will be affected by this change, which is scheduled to take effect as of June 1st of this year. There’s also an interesting discussion going on in her blog as well.
Do you guys think the end of arbitrage is a good or bad thing? Let us all know. Here are some discussions going on about this topic:
- WebmasterWorld: AdSense Disabling Arbitrage Accounts by June 1st
- DigitalPoint Forums: Poll – Are you happy about this?

It’s an interesting topic, but with the exception of MFA sites, I don’t see why anyone should get banned for arbitrage. Check out what Shoemoney has to say in this video post.
so does this mean John Chow and all those other bloggers can’t send their IMs through Adword anymore? Personally, I think Google’s being retarded . . .yes, I said it . . . RETARDED!
well they’d only get slammed if google thought they were driving traffic just to convert via adsense. but the thing i don’t like about these kinds of moves is that sometimes there are people who are on the fence that get wrongly flagged. then you have to prove to google that you’re worthy of reinclusion. “guilty until proven innocent.”
The first I heard of this was on Shoemoney.com when he did this video post. Fortunately, he played down all these fears, and I hope he’s right.
yea i just saw this too. he has a good point. i think what google’s over-arching goal is is to get rid of mfa sites. made-for-adsense, or made-for-affiliate, sites. i’d like to see the landing pages of these guys who are getting the boot!!
I saw that same thing that Spud is talking about. And I’d bet he’s right.
Of late google’s been pretty busy..offering daily trend updates, being rumored to be in talks to buy Chicago-based Feedburner, partnering up with Salesforce and now giving the boot to Adsense Arbitrageurs !!
Man I hope they don’t get control of Feedburner. They are far reaching enough already. I suppose you can’t turn down the kind of money Google will throw at them, but there has to be some sort of checks and balances going on.
I’m still pretty interested in seeing what Wiki is going to do with their SE project.

It can’t be good,
So I write a post about Product X then set up some ad words for the post and on the page I have adwords.
A user comes in from the adwords reads the content decides that they don’t want product X then see an adword for Product Y and clicks it.
That should be valid.
Though I am not using Adwords,
but I am totally against the google ban if people draw visitors and use adsense on their sites…
I don’t see why Google would have a problem with this. They make money off the Adwords Ads and then make money whenever someone makes money off AdSense so where is the problem for Google?
It`s a very grey area and one i think google would find hard to prove unless it wsa a gross abuse of the system.
