Flashback Friday Volume 3

You all know what time it is… That’s right, it’s Flashback Friday. And this week I’m celebrating the era of scrunchies, sneakers, b-boying, mix tapes, hyper color, boomboxes, track jackets, and MTV. Reflecting back, I fondly remember sixth grade camp, NWA, and Gleaming the Cube. Anyway, without further ado, here we go…

When Hip Hop Rocked
There are hip hop tracks, and then there are hip hop tracks. If you don’t bob your head, sing along, or shake your booty to this jam, then there might be something wrong with you. ;) Juuust kidding… But on the real, this is how hip hop rocked in 1988.

Name That Emcee, Yo!
Here’s another guessing game that I call Name That Emcee, Yo! Take a stab at it and see if you can guess who’s who. I tried to make number 2 difficult, but you guys surprised me last week so I’m sure someone will get it pretty quick!

2. Big Daddy Kane
3. Eric B. (Where’s Rakim?)
4. Chuck D.

I miss old school rap ;-( The new stuff just has no life, no soul. It’s all about the money and not about the struggle. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

hmm, lyndon, i’m surprised both you and maki guessed #3 is Eric B. nope. but you’re close! and #2 isn’t big daddy kane, but you’re close on that one too. i almost posted a pic of BDK but figured someone would guess is right away. ahahahaha….i guess i’m goooooood ;)

on a side note, if you wanna hear some really good hip hop, check out Quannum records. they got dj shadow, blackalicious, and latyrx.

thanks cheynne. appreciate the sentiments. i wanted to post more but it’s really hard to find good pics of old school artists. plus i didn’t wanna post pics of obscure/underground artists that would be really hard to guess (poor righteous teachers, etc). this post took me forever! LOL

Damn, that one is tough. Chuck D was easy, but #2 is killing me, I keep looking at him and thinking Al B. Sure. Not hip hop. I think it’s the suit throwing me off.

Number 3 is Eric B and I don’t know who the rest are..

Interesting to see that #4 is wearing a Minor Threat T-shirt, Minor threat being one of my favorite early D.C 80s hardcore punk bands. :)

@ray - thanks for mentioning this post. it was fun creating it.
@taylor - i will for sure keep coming by! :D and thanks for passing the torch of the rockin girl blogger. i feel so flattered… do i need to make a speech? and will the thing fit in my car??
*ahem* is this thing on?!
@raz - nope, not al b. sure, but lyndon and maki were really close, if you wanna take another guess :D
@jeff - you can always catch up by learning your old school ;) class is officially in session
@viva - yep, that one is tupac. he was a cute kid
@maki - that’s pretty cool. i didn’t know who minor threat was. i thought it was merely ironic social commentary :) thanks for letting me know!

hey there. alright when i am not busy posting about health and fitness i am scouring through my music collection. i am an avid hip hopper, and so this “test” has proven to be very fun. anyways, the missing answer for picture #2 is Father MC!! While he was a hip hopper he definitely could be considered a New Jack Swinger. so, his addition in this quiz is a bit suspect.

word to ya mutha!
