Flashback Friday Volume 3
Jun 22nd, 2007 by msdanielle
You all know what time it is… That’s right, it’s Flashback Friday. And this week I’m celebrating the era of scrunchies, sneakers, b-boying, mix tapes, hyper color, boomboxes, track jackets, and MTV. Reflecting back, I fondly remember sixth grade camp, NWA, and Gleaming the Cube. Anyway, without further ado, here we go…
When Hip Hop Rocked
There are hip hop tracks, and then there are hip hop tracks. If you don’t bob your head, sing along, or shake your booty to this jam, then there might be something wrong with you.
Juuust kidding… But on the real, this is how hip hop rocked in 1988.
Name That Emcee, Yo!
Here’s another guessing game that I call Name That Emcee, Yo! Take a stab at it and see if you can guess who’s who. I tried to make number 2 difficult, but you guys surprised me last week so I’m sure someone will get it pretty quick!

What Happened The Year You Were Born? A Quiz.
As some of you already know, I turned 30 this past April. In memory of these decades past, I’ve decided to post another interesting quiz that I saw on Taylor Blue’s blog site. My first thought upon reading the results was, “Shakira’s only 30?!” Then I kept reading and thought, “Oh yeah, Stars Wars came out in 1977! Sweet!!”

I guess old school rap is not my forte. Somehow the first picture reminds me of Tupac…lol

4. chuck d

Well I know four was Chuck D. But 3 could pass for his brother.
Yeaaa Boyiiii
Aren’t you too young to remember this stuff? I’m not going to even guess on the photos this time.
i’m 30 yo! mos def not too young to remember this stuff… i remember hearing Joy and Pain and my 8th grade dance. ah when life was simpler
[…] Ms Danielle has another Flashback Friday […]
It’s so nice to know you are always talking about me here! At least someone appreciates me….when does that contest end??? hint hint… (email me)
i love your little quizzes. i have no idea how you find them, but they’re great! haven’t announced the end date yet…
I will never tell because then you won’t come around anymore….
I am 32!! You are young yet girl…but I remember dreading turning 30 … but its all over now…look forward girl!!!
1. 2 Pac
2. Big Daddy Kane
3. Eric B. (Where’s Rakim?)
4. Chuck D.
I miss old school rap ;-( The new stuff just has no life, no soul. It’s all about the money and not about the struggle. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
hmm, lyndon, i’m surprised both you and maki guessed #3 is Eric B. nope. but you’re close! and #2 isn’t big daddy kane, but you’re close on that one too. i almost posted a pic of BDK but figured someone would guess is right away. ahahahaha….i guess i’m goooooood
on a side note, if you wanna hear some really good hip hop, check out Quannum records. they got dj shadow, blackalicious, and latyrx.
wow, I respect this post danielle, you have the greats up there…
thanks cheynne. appreciate the sentiments. i wanted to post more but it’s really hard to find good pics of old school artists. plus i didn’t wanna post pics of obscure/underground artists that would be really hard to guess (poor righteous teachers, etc). this post took me forever! LOL
Damn, that one is tough. Chuck D was easy, but #2 is killing me, I keep looking at him and thinking Al B. Sure. Not hip hop. I think it’s the suit throwing me off.
Hey girl stop by my moms blog…you won the rockin girl blog award!!! Come get it soon because its really heavy….LOL
I’m 21…. I feel so out of place.
That was my first thought. The first picture looks a lot like tupac.
Number 3 is Eric B and I don’t know who the rest are..
Interesting to see that #4 is wearing a Minor Threat T-shirt, Minor threat being one of my favorite early D.C 80s hardcore punk bands.
@ray - thanks for mentioning this post. it was fun creating it.
and thanks for passing the torch of the rockin girl blogger. i feel so flattered… do i need to make a speech? and will the thing fit in my car??
class is officially in session
thanks for letting me know!
@taylor - i will for sure keep coming by!
*ahem* is this thing on?!
@raz - nope, not al b. sure, but lyndon and maki were really close, if you wanna take another guess
@jeff - you can always catch up by learning your old school
@viva - yep, that one is tupac. he was a cute kid
@maki - that’s pretty cool. i didn’t know who minor threat was. i thought it was merely ironic social commentary
Jesus, does NOBODY know Rakim?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH!! OMG i just saw this comment. Thanks Daniel!
hey there. alright when i am not busy posting about health and fitness i am scouring through my music collection. i am an avid hip hopper, and so this “test” has proven to be very fun. anyways, the missing answer for picture #2 is Father MC!! While he was a hip hopper he definitely could be considered a New Jack Swinger. so, his addition in this quiz is a bit suspect.
word to ya mutha!
word. gotta love I’ll Do For You. much respect since he helped launch mary j.’s career. thanks for the hip hop schooling.
u listen to blackalicious? gift of gab definitely has the gift… who’s in your current rotation?
phew! so that completes Flashback Friday Volume 3! here are the answers:
i still gotta give him props. thanks everyone for participating! you all win a year’s supply of canned tomatoes for playing! juuuuuust kiddin………
1. Tupac
2. Father MC
3. Rakim
4. Chuck D
it was hard to find pictures of some of the old school emcees. and while father mc was a questionable entry
haha… Rakim is the man and Chuck D is nice too… This is cool, glad to see there are still come folks that have love for old school hip-hop. What about EPMD, Biz Markie, Too Short, MC Lyte? There aren’t too many to name… Cool post… Canned Tomatoes, that’s a lot of a ketchup…
try googling bizmarkie and finding a picture between 1985 and now that doesn’t look exactly the same! lol i tried… mc lyte, thought about it but didn’t search for a pic. yea there are a lot but finding good pics is hard. you wouldn’t believe how long it takes me to put together these posts…! and thanks for the kind words. your ketchup is on its way
