Flashback Friday Volume 14

It’s a fact that I love music. It’s a fact that I grew up listening to a lot of heavy metal and classic rock. It’s a fact that some of this will end up here on my blog. This song is so beautifully twisted, and probably my favorite by this band.

A Silly Story

kirk-hammett.gif

When I was in junior high school I wanted to be a drummer, really badly. I wanted to be a bad-ass like Lars. And Kirk Hammett was my “dream guy.” :D One day I saw him at Knott’s Berry Farm from far away, but thought I was just seeing things. I mean, why would Kirk Hammett be at Knott’s Berry Farm? No way, it couldn’t be. I heard later that it was him and that there was a swarm of people chasing after his car when he left! Darn it. Oh well, there went my one chance of ever meeting Kirk Hammett…at Knott’s Berry Farm.

Happy Friday, everybody!

Danielle, that’s an awesome story. I am proud of you for overcoming your regrets.

I’ve never been a heavy metal guy (more an alternative rock person) but that was a pretty cool song!

Good story too, Danielle. I once met David Beckham. I asked him for his autograph… he told me to get lost and then he jumped in his Porsche. :(

my heavy metal days morphed over to alternative around ‘92 when i discovered pearl jam and sound garden. i met tony hawke before which was pretty cool. that dude has hella bodyguards. good thing i’m small and non-threatening :D david beckham sounds like a jerk, but maybe he was having a bad day. kelly slater is like that too. one time i was at the beach watching the OP Pro surf competition and there was a kid waiting on the shore with a poster and sharpie. kelly slater breezed right past him without even looking down. the kid just stood there with poster and pen in hand looking dejected. it was so sad

Yeah, it’s so sad to see sometimes.

I did get revenge on Beckham. I was a ball boy in a game when he was playing for the Manchester United under 21’s team. The ball came my way so I picked it up and threw it back at Beckham as hard as I could. It’s a shame I was only 11 years old and Beckham wasn’t as big a star as he is now, else that ball would have been aimed at his head!

I’ve always been a fan of the classic rock bands such as Metallica, Zeppelin, Guns and Roses, etc. Atleast at the time the music had some levels of creativity whereas now most of the metal/rock bands all sound exactly the same and are basically the same lyrics changed around in the slightest bit.

Ohhh, what a flashback! Went to see Metallica three times here in Ireland. This tune rocks. In fact, in my circle of friends the line “Darkness imprisoning me” has been worked into a local slang “soundness, imprisoning me” referring to someone who has either done a VERY cool thing or a VERY uncool thing. (sound is our version of “cool”).

My band, called “RSJ” were also a Metallica cover band back in the day. We played in front of a very large crowd of 400 people once!

/end rant

I love Fridays :)

Love it! Metallica has been one of my favorite bands and all of their albums were listened to non-stop while growing up. Their music is great to listen to on my drive to/from work although I notice it usually makes me drive a little faster.

I’ve always wondered how they would have done if Cliff Burton had not died, as I really loved their earlier albums with him playing.

music does that. sometimes when i’m really frustrated in traffic i throw on some super aggro drum n bass. it doesn’t help
i should try down tempo actually

Nice pic, D. One of my fav Metallica tunes too. And if I’m not mistaken, “One” was the band’s first video they ever made. Creepy creepy stuff.

So did you ever get yourself some drum lessons? Or at least the most important lesson: drumstick twirling!

I am a mediocre fan. I was a little put off recently when I saw one of their documentries and they came across as big old whinning babies1

But…. I was working at a festival many years ago and I had used my silly little workers badge to talk my way back stage. I was wondering around and I just so happened to look down and realised I had nearly stepped on Kirk (he is a tiny tiny man!)! Well maybe not stepped on him but I did see him and I thought ‘Ah cool, I’ll go say Hi’. I walked towards him and this huge bodyguard jumped infront of me cross armed. I said ‘I just wanna say hi’ and the guard just stared me down. Kirk looked at me and shrugged his shoulders giving a ’sorry man, cant do anything about it’ look.

So I guess I have respect for him doing that, bloody security guard.

[...] MsDanielle made me smile when she included one of my favorite bands in her Flashback Friday post. If Metallica isn’t your thing, you might still get a laugh out of picturing Danielle as [...]

Hi there,

First, I have to compliment you on your blog–very interesting and fun! I found you based on your interview with Gyutae over at Winning the Web.

I tell ‘ya, meeting your heroes can sometimes be very disappointing. I worked at a newstand in Van Nuys back in the 80’s, and we had celebs coming in all the time. Most of the time, we treated them like any other customer (which they appreciated).

Anyway, one day Gene Simmons drives up and hops out of his car. I had actually met him a few years prior at a friend’s album release party, and he was cool.

I decided to actually greet him by name, so I said “How’s it going, Mr. Simmons?”. Total silence. He sort of just glared at me, paid me for the magazine, and pretended I didn’t even exist.

I was bummed, but I made a promise to myself that whatever level of success I achieve, I would never treat people like that. So I guess it worked out just fine. =)

Again, really enjoy the blog!

Cheers,
brian
