Don’t Forget to Check Your Akismet
May 15th, 2007 by msdanielle
I was surprised when my friend, who will remain nameless, told me he doesn’t check his Akismet spam filter. I asked him if he checks it because it’s where I find a lot of comments that include readers’ links that are mistaken as spam links, and also ping backs to my Technorati Faves and Top 5 posts. I’ve retrieved a bunch of comments from my Akismet spam list (like one very informative comment from Michael Martinez!). So just remember to check it regularly because you could miss something that’s valuable to yourself and to your readers.

Go into your WordPress admin, click on Comments, and then click on Akismet Spam to approve any comments that have been falsely flagged. I check mine once every couple days, if not more. You might be surprised at how many aren’t spam!

I pretty much do all my own spam filtering since it doesn’t take long. The only disadvantage is I think I’m slowly being subliminally programmed to buy viagra and search for…weird (or weirder…) porn.
O-oh….I see my comment was falsely marked as “spam”, luckily you “rescued” my comment from the clutches of Akismet!
Thanks!
WOW … thank god you posted this … with everything going on at my blog … my promotion … Part 4 of my PPC Series … all the reviews … I haven’t checked my spam in a few days … and boy was it packed … however there were 6 comments in there that were not spam!
Those would have been lost in Spam World for who knows how long …
Thanks Again for the reminder!
Darin
betshop and darin - i just rescued both of these comments from the spam folder
ed - is it really subliminal if you’re clicking on the links?!
Who’s clicking the links? Just looking at the repeated “cialis”, “amphetamine” and “hot naked porn” spam comments is making me crazy.
…well, maybe not the hot naked porn.
Seriously, I had no idea there were this many prescription drugs that people wanted to buy over the internet. There’s crap in there I’ve never even heard of.
i kid…i kid!
see here in the US we’re forced to buy rx drugs online bc our health care system is crap and because our doctors prescribe so many drugs to take care of symptoms, people have to pay thru the roof to pretty much stay afloat. (people don’t just market junk drugs online, they market drugs ppl really need. they just have to SPAM the useless ones…) you know, i actually got rejected from Kaiser Permanente health care because on my application i claimed that i have back pain. they said straight up that they don’t accept anyone with ANY previous health problems. WTF?!?!?!?!?!
I’ve been checking my Akismet too lately, and found a few that are not spam! I hope it learns.
thanks for this tip. i found almost a dozen real comments or pingbacks in there.
I always skim through my list.. even when i have 250+ spam at once. Every once ina while you get a valid thing getting caught there.
Me too, I check mine daily!
I used to check my spam comments, but if you have 200 to scroll through and some are 50 lines long each, it’s tough to have the patience to do so.
Good tip - I check my spam filter daily. I would say every three or four days a legitimate comment gets caught. Akismet is still well worth having though!
