Daft Punk: Blog Killer, or Blog Booster? You Decide
Jul 22nd, 2007 by msdanielle

I feel it every time. That anxious excitement in the bottom of my belly when someone asks me, “Hey, are you going to Brasilintime this week?” or “Ben Watt’s spinning at Vanguard, you going?” I want to shout out, “YES!” Then I quickly fall back down to earth, realizing that I’m an adult with responsibilities, and I ask myself if attending every live music event humanly possible will have any detrimental effect on my work, or heavens forbid, my blog.
Last week, at the Hollywood Bowl, Angelica and I met a wonderful couple (Sean and Colleen) during Groove Armada’s performance. Somewhere in one of our conversations, Sean asks us if we’re going to Daft Punk the following weekend. I exclaim, “No! I heard the show’s sold out! Are you going?!” Sean responds, “We have tickets but we have to cancel because my brother’s in town. Do you two want to buy our tickets? We’ll sell them to you for face value.” Hmmm… It took me about half a second to respond. Needless to say, we got the tickets. I’ve heard from almost everyone who’s seen Daft Punk that they’re a must-see. Not trying to jump on the band wagon, I do have to admit, if you love electronic music, it’s not enough to just buy the album Homework and blast it in your livingroom. Daft Punk is an experience in a league of their own, and rightly so.
We arrived at the Los Angeles Sports Arena right at show time, grabbed the first parking spot we could find, and scurried into line. To my surprise, I ran into two people I knew before I even reached the bathroom — capacity was probably around 15,000 – 20,000. What are the chances? One of them was my friend Andrew! After finally reaching the floor level (yes, Sean and Colleen scored floor tickets!) during Ratatat’s performance, we weaved through the crowd as far as the two of us could go. We ended up about 50 feet from the stage. Perfect. On a side note, Ratatat is an amazing band to see live — they bring back a deep soulful sound to guitar that I’ve been craving to hear lately. I’d taken a few videos of them but had to erase them to make more room for Daft Punk on my little camera! I’m sure you can find them on YouTube if you search for them.
Then came the main event. Daft Punk had the crowd on pins and needles as their set opened with a slow, progressively intense introduction to Robot Rock. Their entire performance was executed from the top of the looming pyramid on stage. Can you see them? How cool is that picture I shot of them in their glow-in-the-dark suits? I seriously want one. Anyway, without further ado, here is the intro I shot:
The videos do the show no justice. But it is better to have the video to watch along with and reminisce. I have a few other videos that I took, so if you love Daft Punk or electronic music, please feel free to check them out. The sound is distorted since we were so close and the two-story high speakers blew away my little Canon SD600. In fact, my ears are still ringing slightly… But I’m sure you get the picture. Enjoy!
- A distorted Robot Rock
- The crowd surfer who eats it during “Around the World.” Good times!!
- For you ravers out there
- One More Time, please…
- Music’s got me feelin so free
- The crowd feelin Da Funk
So here’s my question: Do you think posting music content on this blog is too off target? I like writing about internet marketing, ppc, seo, and industry news, but what do you guys think? I have such a love and innate passion for music that I just want to share it with everyone. Does posting about live concerts get in the way of my other content and spread this blog too thin, or do you actually read this music stuff as well as the more informational content? Let me know!

Naa its an ego blog isnt it
I hadn’t realised groove armada or daft punk were popular in the US, I had DP in particular down as more of a European thing… I have a fair bit of their stuff gathering dust somewhere… many moons ago I traded the single of “music” off a friend of mine after he bought it and didn’t like it… cannot remember what I traded for it, but I still love that single…. dunno why as it doesn’t really go anywhere…. and no-one else I know ever liked it…. but I still love that single…
GA did another of my all time fave singles that being Superstylin though I dont really like much of their stuff…
Another all time fave single of mine is Dooms Night by Azzido Da Bass do you have that??
that DP single as “musique”… not used to spelling it that way….
i wouldn’t necessarily listen to each and every one of daft punk’s tracks on my next road trip, but to hear them all compiled together in addition to the cheers of the crowd and insane stage set-up, they are probably now two of my more favored live performers. they’re pretty popular here in the states, but not sure to what extent. but they’re playing in all the major cities and all venues are sold out
don’t know if i’ve heard dooms night but i’m sure it will be easy to find
I like pizza, but it doesn’t mean I’ll eat it everyday. If you feel like writing about other things sometimes, then you should. It helps humanize the experience and break up the monotony of posting the usual topics. Some of your readers may not like it, but if they don’t they can just not read those particular posts.
With the number of blog’s pimped out to ReviewMe and PPP I don’t see how anyone can complain about genuine content….
thanks lyndon
yea i try to throw in at least two informational posts per week, and two personal posts, to mix it up. i appreciate your feedback.
It doesn’t seem like the fans are against you posting this kind of stuff (nor am I), but if they ever turned, you could always guest blog over at musicfordays (where our most recent post is about…….wait for it……..you guessed it! Daft Punk and Kanye West).
Variety is the spice of life and I guess the spice of blogging as well.
i enjoy, the music content on your site!! and i love the story telling attitude you blog has! daft punk is amazing btw your lucky, i recently saw kanye west in concert in ottawa!
thanks mahdi, i hope you had a great time at the concert! i try to tell the stories as if i’m telling someone who actually cares
so thanks for leaving your comment. it shows you care
daft punk would be awesome to see in concert! Well isn’t this a personal blog? so you should be able to talk about personal things not just your blogs subject matter
I find this stuff to be your most interesting but I probably am not representative of your typical reader.
hi goldy! i like your music content too. i gravitate toward that as well. the type of music someone listens to (or doesn’t listen to) tells a lot about them.
@bob – hi bob!
how ya been? daft punk was really awesome in concert. they’re gonna be on the east coast next week but shows are sold out…
@jeff – i had one beer the whole night
can’t say the same for about 90% of the rest of the people there tho…
cool avatar!!
If you are talking to me… thanks.
Haha yes, I’m sure the E you take during those trance/electronic shows will have a detrimental effect on your work
[...] was going to leave a comment on Ms. Danielle’s latest post earlier, but decided that what I had to say was a bit too long to be just a comment and that it [...]
Ouu. Great video, wish I was there.
Man, if I had the opportunity to see Daft Punk live, I’d take it in a second. Call in sick! I wanted to punch myself when I missed LCD Soundsystem back in May.
I’ll read either way, D.
I do have to admit I generally skip the binky posts, though.
aw, thank you for your honesty, johnny. i won’t tell binky
@ed – they play seattle on the 29th (next sunday) but it’s sold out
Yep, I know…I tried to get tickets. I would’ve driven down if I could’ve gotten tickets.
This is an interesting post at an interesting time for me. I just made a post on my blog on this exact subject: http://www.chrisblogging.com/the-topics-and-subtopics-of-your-blog/
For me, straying away from my main topic can be tough. But for others, they do a great job mixing everything together. Personally, I think that you can pull it off!
Dani
Your love of music is who you are and it is represented in the way you live, dress, and groove….so…. please continue in sharing who you are and what you love
jim
check it out, someone recorded the ENTIRE encore. this is the ending set from beginning to end. i took the photo at top during that last couple minutes. i was somewhere in the middle of the mass of people on the floor, about 50 ft from the foot of the stage… um, i don’t know how many kilometers that is….

Well I enjoyed this post so for me, no not off topic.
I know my blog is fairly new but I did post recently where I mentioned 2 gigs that I had gone to and gave rough reviews. Strangely it’s the only post that still has no comments on it!
I’m not going to stop posting randomly about gigs and other stuff, after all my blog proclaims to be random!! But I will be prepared for lower readings or at least commenting on days that I do such a thing.
You should definitely post about Daft Punk and any other concerts you go to that are as awesome as Daft Punk! And Ratatat rocks too, the cheetah sample in Wild Cat blows my mind!
Ever wonder what Around The World would sound like if it was done with acoustic instruments?
Check it out:
