The Purchase

I purchased a PPC-related domain name a couple months ago, thinking I’d just throw up a directory on it and that would be that. I mean, it’s a great domain name, what else do I need, right? Well, uh, I’ve never created a directory before so right there it’s going to take me a bit longer to create than I thought. I didn’t realize how many templates there are out there, so I’m asking you guys for some help!

Of course…there is something in it for you.

If you help me find the directory template I need, I’ll give you a free link on the site for one year following its completion.

The Expectations

1. The site will eventually be a paid directory of approved PPC-related listings.
2. Categories will be grouped by geographic location.
3. I’d prefer if the template’s free, or as close to zero dollars as possible.
4. These expectations may vary without prior notice. Remember, I’ve never build a directory before!

The Rules

1. Leave me a directory template suggestion in the comments section of this post, and include a short sentence why you feel it’s my best option.
2. It must be a link to an individual template (not the template site home page) and each entry is only counted once. So no copy cat suggestions.
3. One entry per person.
4. If I choose the template you recommend, I’ll include you as a Featured Sponsor of my new PPC directory for one year for all your hard work!

I hope this is going to be a fun project. I guess I’ll have to wait and see! :)

If you are planning to enter each listing manually, how about just using Wordpress with a static home page? Just a thought.

not listing manually, but approving manually. sorry for the confusion, i couldn’t figure out how to word that part. so basically, users would submit their sites and i would manually approve or disapprove the entry. this leads to higher quality listings and a higher value site. thanks for helping me clarify!

Interesting idea, D. I don’t know too much about Directories or templates for ‘em, but I may do some digging to help you out and to increase my knowledge.
Also, if you’re up for it, I just tagged you to go back to school: Wish I could help ya, Kyle. For ants we generally just call our exterminator who uses a fairly safe (in terms of the kids) spray. He does a heavier spray outside the perimeter of the house, which is much easier to keep the kids away from and helps keep more ants from coming in.

And wow, my wife’s been complaining about stains for a while now. We’ve tried a few different detergents, I’ve changed deodorants, etc. She uses Spray N Wash on the tough stains which seems to work somewhat. But washing our clothes separately from the messy kids clothes definitely helps make a difference.

Oh, and while I’m here, I just tagged you to go back to school: http://www.ultimatecoupons.com/blog/?p=314

GARRRR. So sorry, D. Stupid laptop pasted previous reply and sent before I meant to. Completely ignore the middle of that post!

I did tag you for a meme though, and I do want to look for templates. So the beginning and end of my comment are valid. Heh.

This is not my area of expertise, but something I might want to learn a bit more about. Can you point us towards some of the templates you have seen so far and tell us what you did and did not like about them?

well i started browsing through them and just got confused because there are different “types” of directories and i didn’t know what they were. it was more technically challenging to find a directory template than just a regular blog theme. so i haven’t done that much investigating yet. i have so many other things going on that i need to focus on right now, so trying to research a whole different type of site is too time consuming for me right now…at least this month…

I started a similar thing and for the minute I’m doing the inputing manually but would love to find the template yu are after too :)

I had very hard trouble finding anything to help me find a directory template or even how to make one.

Hi Danielle,

No good asking for templates until you have the software sorted out… I don’t think wordpress is the way to go for this kind of site.

A simple way would be to use media wiki… which I used for spamipedia.org (same as million x wiki’s) or trawl sourceforge to see if there is any specific directory software… or get some written on elance or getafreelancer…

Hey Danielle,

I don’t envy you. Just testing and choosing a directory template is a daunting task in itself! I have never used any of these but did see some good comments on them from others. I checked them out quickly and thought you might be interested in testing them.

Hope this can help in your due diligence. Good luck!

There are lots of FREE directory templates available online. Though, I don’t use commercial or free pre-made directory template. I built my own from scratch because it gives me flexibility. Check out my template site at http://www.ex-designz.net/template/default.asp

Hi Daniel, I found your blog through seomoz.org. I’m a frequent visitor there. I was just browsing there when I came across one of your comment about Google pagerank. You said that computer.org pagerank went down from 9 to 6. You can drop by my cubicle anytime LOL. You have a beautiful blog.
